TRANSLATION - for simple words and phrases use

emails or websites - select the text and then do "ctrl c" to copy and
"ctrl v" to paste. It's not perfect but you'll get the gist. |
 |
OFFICE DE
TOURISME - there is a
tourist information office in the centre of Wimereux (Quai Alfred
Girard). If you walk along
the high street (Rue Carnot) away from Boulogne, you'll come to a complex junction
with the town hall on your left, a bridge in front and a church on your
right. Don't cross the bridge - turn left and the small but very modern
looking building backing on to the water way is the Tourist Information
office www.ville-wimereux.fr.
They have a number of guides in English and should still have a
photocopied map which is especially helpful! |
 |
MAPS -
try www.mappy.com (select maps from
home page) or www.express-map.com
for French town or street maps. |
 |
KIDS STATION - Wimereux was awarded "Kid Station" status which means there's plenty
going on for children and families. |

OTHER WIMEREUX
SITES

Living In Wimereux
 |
LIVING FRANCE -
www.livingfrance.com is a web site which supports the popular
magazine. A really good starting point. |
 |
ESTATE AGENTS - all the Estate Agents (Immobiliere) cover
a radius of approx.15 miles. However, there are three in the town, who
are all used to speaking with English (or English speaking). They are
Opale Gestion Immobiliere tel 03 21 32 40 36, Agence Lariviere tel 03 21
32 42 67, Agence Bataille tel 03 21 32 43 62. They all have their
offices in the main street (Rue Carnot). Additionally there are several
in Boulogne sur Mer. |
 |
IN GENERAL - expect to pay quite a bit extra for being
close to the sea. You'll get a lot more for your money if you're
prepared to be a few minutes drive from the beach e.g. in Wimille |
|
 |
Restaurants & Hotels
 |
WIMEREUX - all the restaurants below are very popular & it is advisable to book
in advance.
 |
Speranza
- Always
good, usually have Moules Marinieres as one of their starters. Usually several English voices to be
heard. 43 rue du general de gaulle, Tel: 03 21 32 46 09 |
 |
Chez Yan
- Another good value medium priced restaurant. The homemade Tarte Citron is delicious. 25 Rue Napoleon, Tel:

 |
Hotel Du
Centre -
Family run hotel & restaurant in centre of town. The menu changes daily. Three courses
from £12. Great food - very French. Love the Salad de Chevre Chaud
starter. 78 rue carnot, Tel: 03 21 32 41 08, email

La Liegeoise at
L'Atlantic Hotel. Great for a special occasion. Lots
of sea food. Excellent position right on the sea front. In the summer
ask for a table in the window. (pres de la vitrine). Good web site. Digue promenade,

Cap Nord
- This brasserie restaurant was recommended by a visitor to this website
who has 40 years experience of Wimereux. Digue Promenade Tel:

|
 |
BOULOGNE-SUR-MER
 |
La Matelote -
Expensive but we think it's better than Relais De La Brochante
in Wimille. |
 |
Estaminet
Du Chateau - A
very good inexpensive restaurant in the old town. |
|
|
 |
Bars
 |
There are lots of good bars
here but we particularly like The Dauphin (3 Rue Carnot), Cafe de la Mairie
(Rue Carnot) & JFK Bar
on the sea front. All three serve good quality low priced food. Best
of all for food is Chez Jo (Cafe de la Poste) just off Rue Carnot by
the Huit a Huit supermarket. |
|
 |
Things
to do
 |
1-2 HOUR PIT STOP
 |
Take a Stroll - Wander along the high
street, Rue Carnot, and enjoy some provincial window shopping then
cut down to the promenade. Take a leisurely walk back along the
prom. In summer you can admire or ridicule the blue beach huts
depending on your taste. About half way along - if the tide is not
in - you'll see an area of rocks that forms an informal children's
pool. Enjoy a paddle and an ice cream or stop nearby for a light
lunch and watch the world go by. |

 | Mini Golf - 2,Rue du Tennis, Tel: 03 21 87
46 14. There is apparently somewhere to eat here which is reported
to be very good. There's also a children's park next door which has
the benefit of lots of shade and seats for adults. |
 | Swimming Pool - there's a good municipal
swimming pool in Boulogne - next to Nausicaa. Tel: 03 21 30 78 30.
Men have to wear proper trunks - no swimming shorts and swimming
hats are needed but you can purchase them at the pool. |
|
 |
VISITOR CENTRES
 |
Nausicaa is the
sea-life centre on the edge of Boulogne (Wimereux side). It's walking distance if you're keen (about
3.5 miles) and well worth a visit. There's parking at the top of the
hill approaching Nausicaa - or right outside but only if you're lucky.
www.nausicaa.fr |
 |
La Coupole - Second
World War Museum presented in English. Located in nearby Saint-Omer.
www.lacoupole.com
|
|
 |
AMUSEMENT PARKS
 |
Bagatelle - located
in the town of Merlimont (close to Montreuil - so a fair treck), it
includes a zoo and amusement park.
www.bagatelle.fr |
 |
Dennlys Parc -
located in Dennebroeucq, (out past Desvres and about an hour away).
I took my five year old here and there was plenty to do. We
particularly liked the round tyre boats with the little "lawn mower"
engines. Some of the unsupervised rides (big swings that seat about
8 people) are best avoided if you don't know the French for "stop
this thing, I think I'm going to be sick".
www.dennlys-parc.com |
 |
Aqualud - water play
world with masses of slides and water fun both
indoors and outdoors. Located right on the beach front in Le Touquet.
www.aqualud.com. |
|
 |
VISITING NEARBY TOWNS
 |
Boulogne is very
close and well worth a visit. The marina is in the lower part of
town (near Nausicaa) or you can climb through the centre of town and
into the old town where you can stroll along the ramparts and along
cobble-stone streets. There is a tourist information office outside
Nausicaa. |
 | Le Touquet is the"Lytham-St.Annes" of the
Pas-De-Calais region. Lovely shops and just a little bit posh. Allow
an extra 45-60 minutes for traffic in the peak season. |
|
 |
SHOPPING
 |
Wimereux -
in addition to the high street, there is also
a twice weekly morning market (Tues & Fri) and a bio market (organic
produce) one Sunday morning each month. Walk to the end of the
promenade (heading away from Boulogne) and when you cross the bridge
just before the children's play area turn right for the market.
Petit Casino & Huit a Huit are two mini supermarkets on the main
high street. |
 |
Boulogne -
the pedestrian only centre has lots of French provincial shops.
There is a twice weekly morning market (Sat & Weds). If you like
bargain hunting (French version of Wilkinsons) then try "Mady" on
nearby Rue Faidherbe. |
 |
Cite Europe -
59,000 square metre complex by the channel tunnel (about 20 minutes
drive). Go if you must and see Tesco, the Disney Store and a lot of
English people. Opening times and shops on
www.cite-europe.com. |
 |
Marques Avenue -
Designer Outlet Centre. This is next to Cite Europe and was new in
2003. It was fairly quiet when we visited recently and much easier
to get a table for lunch than Cite Europe. |
|
 |

player, great, you'll probably get to meet some of the people who
